Understanding Your Rights

Living abroad in a vibrant city like Dubai is typically viewed as a lifetime adventure, brimming with new cultures, experiences, and opportunities. However, the reality of domestic abuse, which knows no borders, can cast a shadow over this experience. The distance from familiar support systems may seem daunting, but remember, support services are available and a caring community is ready to assist. Statistics indicate that one in three women will experience abuse in their lifetime. If you find yourself feeling isolated in your struggle, know that you are not alone.

In the UAE, your battle against domestic abuse is supported by the law—specifically, Federal Decree-Law No. (13) of 2024. This legislation isn’t just about offering help—it’s about ensuring justice. The law now acknowledges various forms of abuse, including psychological, sexual, and financial, and imposes stringent penalties on perpetrators, including fines of up to 100,000 AED and imprisonment. This significant update to the law is a crucial step forward, recognizing that abuse extends beyond the physical to encompass a wide spectrum of abusive behaviours.

Seeking Trustworthy Legal Advice

Online forums can be great for venting and quick advice, but navigating the complex maze of domestic abuse laws and divorce requires a professional. Look for a lawyer or mediator who gets it—someone who’s not just there to support, but to lead with empathy, professionalism, and compassion. Trust your gut, and don’t be shy about getting clear on the costs and understanding how the process works. Clarity brings power.
